Big Rig Racing Formula De League Season XV Presented By Pile O' Bones Brewery

The Game

Formula Dé is a fast-paced racing game in which the cars' top speeds are limited by having to end a certain number of turns in each curve of the racetrack. This can be tricky, because although players can regulate their speeds by choosing which gear to be in and each gear allows a certain range of movement, the exact amount is determined randomly. Great fun for a big group. The board game is great on its own, but the league structure makes it shine in so many ways.  We feature 20 regular race managers who compete in nine events over the course of the year, with full prize support for each race and the end of the season provided by our amazing sponsor Pile O' Bones Brewery.  Spare drivers are encouraged to join in the fun when our regulars are unable to attend events, and are eligible for prizes as well.

League Structure & Rules

What are the League Rules in Play?
The rules published with Formula D are the official rules used by the league.
(1) All rules in play except weather.
(2) All races will be TWO laps.
(3) In addition, the following house rules are in play:

Car Configuration
Drivers will be allocated 20 attribute points to configure their car before each race.  It is permissible to allocate 0 points to brakes and gearbox.  Every other attribute must have a minimum of 1 point.  For races 2 through 8, each car configuration must be unique from each other.  For race 1 (qualifying) and race 9 (finale) drivers may use any 20 point car configuration they desire.

A Die Rolled is a Die Used
If you roll a die and it is a legal gear die to roll, you must use the die rolled. Adjust the shift to reflect this. (Only if the gear is 1 up or 1 down - a player cannot be forced to use a gearbox to make the roll legal).

Over-Revving (Popping the Clutch)
Once per turn, any driver may add movement to their roll by "over-revving" their engine. To do this they must spend one engine point. When spending this point the car does not leave a debris counter. The extra movement gained is determined by the gear the car is in. Using all the extra spacing is mandatory unless you wish to spend brake points to reduce movement.  Over-revving benefits depend on the gear you are in:
  1st - 2nd: 1 space
  3rd - 4th: 2 spaces
  5th - 6th: 3 spaces

Slip Streaming
You can pop the clutch before or after a slip stream.
You can slip stream multiple times.
You cannot brake to set up a slip stream.
You can slip stream in a corner but must follow all arrows to do so.
If you slipstreamed during your turn and you enter a corner, your car loses 1 brake point but you do not move back a space for that brake point.
Braking is not allowed while slipstreaming. Slipstreaming is optional.
Slipstreaming breaks the rules of lane changes. You can move two lanes if slipstreaming even if you already moved through those lanes.
If you slipstream and end up in front of the car you slipstreamed, you do not have to roll the collision dice for that car

Coasting
When an engine blows, you go down one gear each turn trying to either finish or make the pits. If you make the pits you are allowed to fix one engine point. (The engine repair point must come from the team allocation of remaining repair points). While coasting, the car MUST shift down every turn (thus it is gradually burning off speed it had built up prior to blowing the engine). If, after rolling the 1st gear die, the car has neither reached its pit nor finished the race, the car is eliminated. When the car is removed from the track it does not drop debris.

Suspension Debris
If the car loses a suspension point from driving over debris, it also drops a debris.

Car Crash Effects on Future Races
Whenever a car is eliminated from the game due to a collision or crash, (Body, Suspension, Brakes, Tires), roll a d20 and consult the table below:
• 01 – 01: Driver Killed. Car misses the next race while a new driver can be added to the team. (A new driver needs to be brought in for the team).
• 02 – 03: Driver injury. Driver misses next race while being rehabilitated.
(Substitute driver can race for team next race so team is not down a car).
• 04 – 20: No adverse effects, take a driver training course though. :)

Pole Positions
The first qualifying race of the season teammates will be separated and placed in different races.  Positions will be randomly determined with a team that has pole position (1st) in one race having 10th position in the other race.  A team with 2nd position in one race will be 9th position in the other race etc.

Pole position and other positions onward are awarded to cars based on accumulated points. Lowest points get pole, second lowest next, and so on. In case of a tie, the driver with less league tenure gets the better spot. If still tied, then randomly resolve which car gets precedence.

Pit Lanes
Blocking never occurs in the pit lane. Cars may pass through other cars. No two cars may occupy the same space.

Pit Stops & Repair Points
Each driver gets two repair points that they can use in a full pit stop to repair items on their car, same as in the official rules. However, in team play, one driver can give his/her teammate his repair points to use for extra repairs thus each team has a pool of four repair points. For each repair point used over two, the driver must exit the pits in one gear lower than fourth.

For instance:
1 Repair Points - Can exit pits in 4th Gear or lower
2 Repair Points - Can exit pits in 4th Gear or lower
3 Repair Points - Can exit pits in 3rd Gear or lower
4 Repair Points - Can exit pits in 2nd Gear or lower

If performing a quick pit stop, the driver must end their turn in 4th gear and may raise or lower their gear next turn as normal.

Pit Colours With Relegation
With relegation between two leagues, Premiere & Bush, there will be times when there are teams of the same colour in the same race. To determine the pit colour in these cases, the team(s) that are higher in the points standings retain their pit colours. The cars that need to choose other pit colours do so in order of their current team standings, with the higher placed team getting to choose.

Summary of Order of Movement
What is the order of movement for cars on the track?
(1) Cars in front go first.
(2) If in the same position on the track, the car in the higher gear goes first.
(3) If one car is in the next feature (corner or straight) and the other is not, the car in the front most feature has precedence.
(4) If they are in the same gear on a straight, the car on the inside of the upcoming turn has precedence.
(5) If two cars are in a corner, at the same position, and in the same gear... the car that arrived there first goes first.

What is the order of movement for cars in and near the pits?
(1) Cars on the track whose front end is past the end of the pit entrance (such that they no longer have the option to pit).
(2) Cars in the pit lane
(3) Cars in the pit stands
(4) Cars on the main track that haven't reached the end of the pit entrance (and still have the option to pit).

Clarification on Blocking
You must make choices along your path that will enable you to go as far as possible. In other words, you cannot intentionally ram another vehicle if there is a path for you to take that would allow your car to go farther.

Straights Driving Code & Passing
Cars may switch up to 2 lanes left or right but are not allowed to zig-zag back to a previous lane in the same movement.  Cars may NOT voluntarily switch to a lane behind a car that forces them to pass that car. Cars that start their turn in a lane behind other cars or debris may switch lanes to pass.  This is an involuntary lane change and DOES NOT count toward the 2-lane limit.  Cars that are forced to make an involuntary lane change may zig-zag back to their previous lane after overtaking the car/debris in front of them, provided it does not cause them to voluntarily pass another car in that lane. After passing cars and debris, normal lane change rules apply.

Re-Roll Tokens
Rolling a natural 20 on the black d20 gives the racer a RE-ROLL token (donkey). These donkeys can be turned in to re-roll one of their future rolls, or turned in to force another player to re-roll any roll. Donkeys are not carried over from race to race. If a driver crosses the finish line or DNFs, they can no longer use re-roll tokens they received for that race to affect other drivers.

Team Effort
Only the player or the player's teammate may assist or comment on the movement of a race car. No assisting other teams, except for rules clarifications.  To speed up play and due to physical space & visual limitations, opponents seated in close proximity to a player's car may be allowed to help count and physically move the car if they have the permission of the player.  However, they are not allowed to provide the player with movement options or strategy advice.

Special Rules for Qualifying Race (Race #1)
-Teammates will be generated randomly and placed in seperate races (but the same course)
-Teams and their drivers will be randomly assigned 2 balanced starting positions between the two races
    For instance: 1st & 10th, 2nd & 9th, 3rd & 8th, 4th and 7th, 5th & 6th, & vice versa
-Car colours will be randomly assigned for this race based on position
-Cars are free to pit in ANY colour pit stop they desire that has an open space
-Drivers will be given 4 repair chips to use for their cars (no sharing between teammates & races)
-Since there are no teammates at each table, Team Effort rules will be relaxed for new tenure/first time drivers for this race only
-Points for this race will be calculated based on the Bush League formula
-Accumulated team points will determine which league teams will be placed in for Race 2.  The top 5 teams will be promoted to Premiere League, and the bottom 5 teams will be relegated to Bush League
-Car colours for the rest of the season will determined after Race 1 based on points position, with the 1st place teams in each league having priority choice, 2nd place teams having second choice etc.

Player Structure for the League
This is the fifteenth season for the Formula De League, and the second season under new management. Big Rig Racing Formula De League has taken over from the legacy left by Bixby's Formula De League.  Play consists of a season of nine races. Twenty players, called race managers, each choose a fictitious driver that is their racer for the season. These drivers are placed in ten teams of two drivers each. The drivers compete throughout the season by earning points for their driver and their team. At the end of the season, the driver with the most points is the championship driver and the team with the most points is the championship team. Competition runs high and the roar of the engines is mild compared to the roar of the crowd when someone's car blows up.

Normally this is done in a ten-racer league format.  For Season 12, Bixby added another ten racers, and it worked well. Race nights will consist of two separate races: Premiere League & Bush League. The top five teams race in the premiere league and the remaining five teams are in the bush league. League promotion / demotion will happen at the end of every race. At the end of the ninth and final race the final standings will be calculated after the last promotion / demotion. The premiere league is where the prestige is. The majority of the prize pool is allocated to the premiere league, with the remainder going to the bush league. Throughout the season, teams will try to race their way into the premiere league and maintain that standing. A whole new level of meta-gaming fun to be had.

Where are League Events?
The Big Rig Racing Formula De League is hosted in the venue known as "The Truck Stop". All race events and race night signups are located on the Play With Your Food community website in the Truck Stop Venue section. All racers and spare drivers for the league need to register for each event separately.

Who can play in League Events?
The Big Rig Formula De League is generally limited to members who have access to the Truck Stop Venue Formula De Section on the PWYF community site. The league is limited to twenty players each season but often looks for spare drivers to substitute when regular players cannot make a race night. Spare drivers are chosen in order that they signed up for the race: First come, first served. Since beer is provided by Pile O' Bones, spare drivers must pay a $5 fee and 100% of that goes to charity through PWYF.

When are League Events?
This league is in place for the calendar year. There are nine races total for the season, with races typically occurring on the second Wednesday every month. There will be a summer break in June, July & August when no races will occur. Doors to the venue open at 6:15pm. Please show up promptly by 6:45pm to configure your car and for announcements. Races will start at 7:00pm sharp. If a driver has not shown up by race start, they will be required to pay a $5 late fee as a charity donation to PWYF to race, and their team partner will be tasked with moving their car until they arrive.  If races are still ongoing at 11:00pm remaining drivers who have not had a turn the current round will get a chance to do so and the race will be over.  Track placement after the final round will determine the final standings for that race.

League Points & Prizes

Pile O' Bones Brewery continues their generous sponsorship of our Formula De League. They will provide kegerator beer for the enjoyment of racers during league nights, and they will also provide 240 beers for the prize pool. That is a lot of beer. Thanks Pile O' Bones!!!  Please be aware the Big Rig Formula De League has a NO DUI policy that all participants must sign on and adhere to be invited to the Truck Stop, so please drink responsibly and remember to always plan a safe ride home.

League Point Structure

Points formula per race:
A) Each racer gets 1 base point to start with.
B) If your racer did not DNF, add 1 more point to your base.
C) Add to that the number of cars you finish ahead of at the end of the race (DNF = 0)
D) Add to that a bonus for finishing in the top 3 (+3 for first / +2 for second / +1 for third)
E) Multiply the points by the league multiplier (22 for Premiere / 20 for Bush)
F) Add your starting position to your score (Pole =1, 2nd=2, etc.)
G) Subtract your ending position from your score (DNF= -10)
H) Both team members add 3 points for each repair chip remaining in their possession
=Score for the race each night

Points will be recorded each race and accumulated over the course of the season to determine final standings at the end of the year.

If a Race Manager cannot make race day, a substitute player can play in place of the absent person. Note that drivers are tied to players. A substitute player means that a substitute driver is used. Substitute drivers still earn points for the team they are racing for and can win race night prizes, but they are not eligible for end of season team prizes.

If there are no substitute players available and one race manager on a team is missing at race start, their teammate may configure their car and race for them until they show up to the venue.  If the race manager is expected to be missing the entire race, their teammate must create a unique driver name under their control so points can be tracked.

If both players on a team miss the race and there are no substitutes available, that team's cars will sit in their starting positions on the track and will stay there until:
(A) A driver shows up that can race for the team.
(B) The cars are lapped, at which point they are removed. Note. When being lapped, the dead cars do not block or interfere with the track as it is assumed they would have been removed earlier.

Roster of Racers, Registration & Team Assignments

Roster of Players for the League

-Racers from the previous season will get first chance at spots for the current season and will receive an email with registration instructions
-Racers need to pay a league registration fee of $50 by sending an eTransfer to Jen Rediger by January 8th (Add Formula De to notes please)
-100% of registration fees will go to Carmichael Outreach through Play with Your Food (PWYF)
-Any inquiries regarding the league can be made to Richard Sandstra through PM on this forum
-Once all fees are collected, we will randomly generate the teams for the season on January 10th
-Drivers will be required to provide their unique driver name the evening of the first race

*Race Night Registration Policy*
Registration for each race night will be posted in the Truck Stop venue location of this website.  Please post your availability for each race there.  League Members are guaranteed their racing spots as long as they register for each race. League members are required to sign up for each race night in advance; the sooner the better. League members have until the Sunday night (midnight) before the Wednesday race to register. On Monday, vacant league member spots will be allocated; first to our VIP's (the Pile O' Bones spares - Brent & Nathan) who have indicated they would like to attend, and then to spare drivers who have indicated they can attend the race.  This gives spare drivers a couple of days' notice so they are not wondering if they can race or not. This even applies to league members who register on Monday or later of race week... your spot may no longer be available.

We have twenty racers this year with a large spare driver pool and that makes it even more important to streamline the posting/registration process. All races will be booked at least two weeks in advance of the race. If you are having difficulty with the forums or notifications, please message a moderator ASAP to get them sorted out. It would be a shame for paid members to miss race nights.

Spare Drivers - How Can I Get Involved?

For Season XV, to ensure there is a full complement of 20 drivers for each race session, we have created a full-time spare team, known as "Spare Parts".  This means we will always require a minimum of 2 spare drivers at every race.  Spare drivers are encouraged to sign up for race nights in the Truck Stop venue of the forum as early as possible.  Pile O' Bones employees have first priority, followed by other spares on a first come/first served basis.  Spares will first be assigned to missing regular race manager spots, and then on to the spare team.  There is a $5 fee per race to attend with all proceeds going to charity.  Spare drivers are eligible to win race night prizes and partake in the generous beer donation provided by Pile O' Bones.  The league also has a "Most Reliable Spare Driver" prize at the end of the season for the spare driver who attended the most events, and depending on the final position of Spare Parts, another prize for the 2nd Most Reliable Spare Driver.

If you are not currently a spare driver but are interested in participating in the league, please send a PM to a league official (links in the first post of this topic).  We are always looking for more spares to ensure we have a full complement of 20 racers at each event!

Charitable Impact of League

100% of the funds raised by the Big Rig Formula De Racing League are donated to charity as part of the 24 Hour Play With Your Food initiative.  Last year the overall campaign raised over $86000 to help fight hunger and homelessness, with the league itself contributing over $1600.

Play With Your Food Regina

Our chosen charity that we are proud to donate to once again this year is Carmichael Outreach:

Carmichael Outreach

Carmichael Outreach Mission Statement

Carmichael Outreach is a registered charity located in Regina, Saskatchewan that provides various services to those in our community who experience poverty and homelessness. Our mission is to foster empowerment through dignity, respect, and advocacy in our community.

Our vision is to see the END of poverty and homelessness in our community. We know that this will be a big job – no one person, group, or organization can end homelessness alone. That is why we all need to come together to do our parts, however big or small.

Together, we CAN end poverty and homelessness!

Bixby's Formula De League Legacy History

Our Formula D League was founded by Matt Robertson (Bixby) in 2012.  He organized and managed the first 13 seasons of the league with races taking place at his home venue.  Everyone in the league owes a huge debt of gratitude for the work that he's put in over the years to keep the league active and the good times rollin'.  He continues to serve as a mentor and a resource to our league officials starting in 2025 for Season 14 and beyond as we build on the legacy he started.  This area is a historical archive of past seasons.
